I work at Rosedale & saw their set-up last year. I knew there was something sketchy when I asked for a business card & they refused. I googled them & found the same info you did. Generally when photographers don't put pricing on their page or give out vouchers that translates to high pricing. The session is low cost because the print prices are not. That being said, the print pricing is usually high priced because the quality is outstanding. I'm really glad you shared this because I was questioning their tactics & wonder what the catch was. So sorry you had a bad experience!!

LOL! This is the same company that hounded us at a recent Home and Landscape expo.

The salesperson was very used-car salesperson, and we quickly told him no thanks - my husband (right there) is a pro photographer. That USUALLY works, but this guy first got condescending ("Oh, are you a hobbyist?"), then - when we pointed out that no, he's a PRO, published repeatedly, blah blah, we starts chatting him up.

We thought he just wanted to shoot the breeze with a fellow pro, but then he whipped out his book and tried to sell us on coming in for a "date night"! It was so completely surreal.

I'm not into high pressure sales like that, so after we repeatedly tried to get away, I finally just blurted out that I couldn't think of a more horrible way to spend a date night, than getting photographed.

The whole thing was SO weird. I had never heard of them before, and they were marketing at a HOME SHOW - Had to call another photographer friend of mine when we got out of earshot to blab the details and see if she'd ever heard of them.

She had - apparently they'd emailed pretty much every wedding photographer in the city, looking to get them to work as contractors for the business.

The whole thing was smarmy and cheesy. The photos were nice, but very "template". Blown out white background, etc etc.

Sorry to hear you got sucked in :(

He doesn't really do portraits anymore, but was great at em - you could always ask Porter to do some for you :)

It truly did remind me of when you are at a vacation destination and the timeshare sales people slither out of the wood work. They're never going to show you actual pricing until they get you emotionally invested and then coerce a sale. The tactics employed are shady. Period.

Yikes! I went to the Photographer's Guild in Saint Paul and thought they were pricey, but they weren't any where NEAR this company. (Also, PG is a GREAT studio.)

I'm so glad to hear that such a potentially horrific story ended as well as it did for you. My wife has what sounds like similar scarring and was told she couldn't get pregnant. Despite that she now is (due July 23), and although things are scary sometimes, it really helps to have family, friends, and even people you have never met cheering you on.

I abandoned Facebook a couple of months ago - even before this last round of changes. Their business practices are unbelievable - like something you'd read in The Onion. I spread the word whenever I can to friends and family that if they must use it, they need to stay on top of their privacy settings and those of their children.

I hope they step up to the plate and correct this.

I get that we shouldn't focus on material things during the holidays, but that's not th issue here. It's customer service, or a lack there of. This is a great opportunity for them to show if they care about consumers or just the bottom line.

my neighbor told me about the 3 gift rule this year where the 3 wiseman gave one gift to the baby jesus and now she is going to practice that with her children. No worries about how much you spent on who or who got more gifts under the tree, everyone gets three gifts. Let's face it gifts are expensive nowadays and kids want more electronics, with this practice its a lesson in the true meaning of Christmas and keeps people grounded. We got the news on this idea late but will be practicing this next Christmas!

You know, maybe it will take something like this - people going without their expensive electronics gifts, etc - for people to realize that it's NOT actually the end of the world.

I, for one, am sick of Christmas. Growing up, it was about special gifts selected for each person, usually hand made... selecting the absolutely perfect holiday card for each friend. It was about a few weeks of holiday season, and it was special.

Now, Menards has their Christmas shit out in August, with other stores close behind. It's now more like 1/3 of a year of people just stressing out, spending themselves into a hard place - and constantly being pressured by commercials AND the news to do so. It's not about enjoying time with family, it's just SPENDSPENDSPENDSTRESSSTRESSSTRESS.

People tell others off if they're wished 'Happy Holidays' rather than 'Merry Christmas'. Others are more than willing to bodycheck someone for the last canister of cocoa on the shelf, or get into physical altercations over the "it" toy of the year. Now, people are absolutely losing their minds over the possibility of their ipads arriving late.

Poor babies.

If they don't have those purchases in their hands on Christmas morning, their worlds won't end. Really, if anything beyond "well, that kind of sucks, guess it'll arrive next week!" happens, they really need to reevaluate their priorities.

I'm just really sick of seeing what this out of control materialism and stress is doing to everyone - and it's starting earlier and earlier every year. I'm done with it.

I totally understand what you are talking about, so much so that I completely got rid of Facebook AND Twitter. What really got to me, though, was the lack of authenticity from the 700 people I followed on Twitter and the 1000+ people I had on Facebook. (Note: I never used either of these networks as a means to communicate only with friends, but rather for entertainment and wasting time.)

Looking back and reflecting on the two months of almost no Social Media (aside from LinkedIn and Foursquare), I can say that my life has been pretty good. Why? Because I have intentionally released myself from meaningless "connections" and "relationships," most of which did nothing positive for me. It could just be my distaste for the self-proclaimed experts (did you know you can be an expert in anything simply by stating so in your Twitter bio?) or the attention-seeking bloggers that made me leave social networks, but what it really stems down to is, in fact, the lack of authenticity people displayed matched with the surplus of drama people created and entitlement they thought they deserved (for Tweeting... Really, people are entitled because of their Twitter account or Klout score - can you believe it? It's hilarious!).

I actually hate social networks now. Although some say Twitter is the water cooler and Facebook is the BBQ (or whatever analogy you want to use), the reality is that Social Networks are Middle School. Blogs, Facebook walls, Twitter feeds, and the rest are now where "experts" and "professionals" go to passive aggressively mock, call out, and upset their "friends" and others. These actions, mind you, are neither actions of experts or professionals, but instead are actions of immature adults who have nothing better to do.

But, you're right, real friends don't need social networks. But it's interesting that you are using social networks to determine who are your real friends. As for me, aside from this comment and the occasional LinkedIn update, I stick to e-mail or texting. Surprisingly, I feel more connected to people now than I did with my social networking connections.

I guess the main idea is this: turn off the damn computer, stop gossiping about people that have different values or priorities and problems than you, and live. We've ALL wasted too much time doing this bullshit. There is, in fact, a life outside of Twitter chats and Facebook groups. Your offline self is so much more valuable than the online persona you created.

That's google alerts for you, sometimes. I once got an alert from my high school website. (I think their robots sometimes get a little confused.) So sorry to hear that the bullying went both ways with Melissa. There is nothing like words being taken out of context. I hope you have a great Holiday season and I appreciate you stopping over. :)

I got this link for your blog in my google reader. I have NO idea why it took so long to show up. I'm all for free speech, but the article from the DFP was represented to me as a piece on how I feel about mombloggers over sharing. Instead she painted me as bully and saying things for the sake to just be mean. It's been some time, and Melissa got even with me by posting my home address. Yeah, awesome huh. I agree that it's important to realize that our words have consequences. Thank you for replying to me.

Michele,
As you know, I was not the reporter that interviewed you for this story. I merely quoted the other publication. That aside, I'm sorry to hear that the other reporter took your words out of context and glad you were able to put it right, a year and a half-after the fact. Why this article was written is I saw a view of bullying from all sides, (and we wonder where our children get it from.) It's important that we keep the freedom of our speech, but realize the consequences of our words, both as a blogger and the anti-blogger sites.
Thanks!

It's awesome to see my words taken out of context, and the reporter who interviewed me for the article was obviously was pro-Melissa so it's clear to see why I come across that way. I hold in very high regard the role of mother. I also want children to have the most wonderful and joyous life possible. In a time where some blogging mothers share giving enema’s, tantrums (with picture and videos sometimes), play by play divorces, sexual escapes with the internet, I am very aware of what the kids can and will read about themselves and their parents private lives someday. Kids don't need to read about mom giving dad blow jobs, or that their mothers think they're broken, disappointing etc. So I took issue with this. That makes me a bully? I do want to say that I said eons ago that there was massive amount of drinking and dysfunction going on in that household, and lo and behold she came about and said as much on her blog, twitter and pretty much anywhere someone will listen. Wow, that's not bullying that's fortune telling. I felt like someone had to speak up for the kids, because sadly the mother’s themselves were so caught up in their fairy tale lives to see how their words will affect their children.

There are son fuddy-duddys in blogging that do make you question the whole game. You would expect ABC to do their research before agreeing on an ambassador that would represent their brand so poorly.

"Ideal image", huh?

There was a time when "ideal image" was blond hair, blue eyed Caucasians. I seem to recall just a BIT of strife that came from trying to pursue such a narrow ideal.
