Troy happened because Helen’s face was valued more than the rest of the country. A war over physical features (or so the story goes, in a time when women were merely commodities.) Social Media has fought too long and too hard to be treated like a runway. I see the same war being played out more and more in the Social Media Marketing world and frankly? This ain’t the Roman Empire, this is your business. I just can’t take you serious when it’s blatantly clear that the metrics you care most about? Is who thinks you’re gorgeous.
Is this about metrics, passion and creativity… or is it about YOU?
Social Media is bringing out the PPP’s. (Long Name? Pretty, Pretty Princesses: Those that have no objective accept to lure everything to themselves, and as they grow in numbers, their ego follows. It’s never about business- it’s about their face.) Quite Honestly? To those that actually understand and respect business: We Strive to target our audiences and be taken seriously as women. It’s hard when our counterparts are pimping themselves out and promising “Social Media!” when it’s a simply a well-decorated-shell. With hats. Or cleavage. Or whatever.
I’m going to make a comparison, (Ready?) There’s real doctors and then there’s Grey’s Anatomy. (Love the show.) If I need to get a broken leg fixed, something diagnosed, (which never turns out to be Lupus,) or simply put: The Real World? I turn off my television and head to an actual practitioner. If I want to be entertained by Katherine Heigl’s sexual exploits or the drama that actually never happens in a fictional hospital? I turn on the television, marvel at how pretty stage make-up makes everyone look and zone out for an hour to a gloriously, tawdry, pout-lipped show that always seems to leave me saying, “My doctor is NEVER that hot.”
There are actors who can play a convincing role. Then? There are the actual players in the Social Media world. Which one are you? Are you bringing something to the table of Social Media, or are you hoping to just get more followers to fall for who you pretend to be?
Don’t be the girl that’s begging for someone to rescue her by following her profile or buying into what she isn’t; instead, be a warrior in Social Media. It’s time to put actual content behind that façade, not just twitter posts with enough profanity to make a biker mama blush.
Be a player. Don’t be played.
