I was reading through fark.com this morning and attempting to wake up with some stealth Earl Grey when I came upon an article about the Miss USA Pagent. (…and we all know what I think of anerexic, future-skin-cancer patients,) marching around in bikinis…. but I digress.
There’s quite the controversy about Perez Hilton, (why exactly is the queen spoiled princess of ‘all media’ judging anything more than a kindergarten talent show- I won’t know.)
Here’s what went down: Miss California was asked by Perez her thoughts on gay marriage. Homegirl explained, (rather politely,) that she felt that marriage was between a man and a woman. They cut to Perez’s face and the complete and utter shock/horror/playingitupfortheliberalmedia, probably cost her the crown- but who knows. I don’t pretend to know why anyone would want to march like cattle on national television.
Cut to this: http://perezhilton.com/2009-04-19-everyone-is-entitled-to-their-own-opinion-but
I didn’t scroll back on his site enough to see that he actually called her a ‘dumb bitch,’ but I saw his apology for it.
He’s incredibly great at posting his opinion, and I think I’m fantastic at posting mine.
Dear Perez Hilton:
You have built your ‘career’ by drawing strategically placed white marks on peoples faces and under their feet. In middle school, we called this immaturity. I think everyone has cut you some slack because you’re gay, and most of us- care enough to realize the types of mistreatment that all minorities face- whether it’s religious, sexual preference, gender- etc. Your ‘career’ is built on making fun of people, and drawing attention to only what you agree with. Yet- you want tolorance, and respect. You are the proverbial, popular and pretencious senior girl that everyone despises, (but is afraid not to mimic in order to be outcast.) In short: You’re a bigger bigot than Miss Tanerexic. But at least she- stuck to something she truly believed in, knowing it might very well cost her a dream. You fight for what you believe, too so there’s your common ground.
I hope my daughter grows up in a different environment, just as every generation faces diverse issues than the one before. Her sexual preferences would never shatter my dreams. There was a stint in high school where I promise you: I was entirely gay for Gwen Stefani. (I think we all were.) Most of us? Care about cultures, we care about different ideas and beliefs, and we are also trying to struggle with the rights and wrongs in our own heart. Your asking for support, and throwing a temper tantrum and berating someone because she spoke from a place of true belief. Might her opinion not reflect ours? Sure. Might she not understand the consequences of her opinions being put into laws? Probably not. (She’s a beauty queen, not a brainiac.) But- she does understand standing up for something she believes in, and being willing to sacrifice in order to be true to herself. In all honesty- that’s commendable.
You might have just ruined your career. Someone who is fighting for rights of free speech, and sexual preference should not be issuing such verbal abuse towards someone with a politely-stated, different, opinion. Maybe we’ll all grow up and see you for who you are: A man who draws cum stains on celebrity pictures and guesses what they’re up to- because he doesn’t have a real job- he’s simply mimicing and enthralling himself in the delusional world of Hollywood, and putting everyone down in the process.
I won’t pretend you lost a reader, (because in all reality- you never had me.) But I do know that you lost a large amount of respect. It’s one thing to disagree politely with an answer, and another to blast her for no less than 4 posts on your site.
Maybe, what matters most is holding to our own beliefs, but being willing to state them in a respectful, kind, way?
I await my own special white marks. I expect nothing less.
-The Girl.
