“Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.”
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
That’s an interesting way of looking at experience. When I don’t get what I want, I usually think about how unfair life is,
not what I can gain from not getting something. Think about a time when you didn’t get something you wanted – maybe it
was a job, a loan, a new pair of shoes, whatever – now, look at the circumstances that followed. Perhaps a better job offer
came along or your current job responsibilities changed allowing for a promotion or more satisfaction, maybe you learned
how to budget your resources better and ended up not needing that loan after all. It’s easy to focus on what didn’t happen
the way we wanted and not even realize what we gained as a result.

I’m running my fingers through my hair and expecting it to snag on the ring that resided on my finger. Everything slides like water through my fingertips, down my body, and away.
